It was a long and interesting journey and the sailing wasn’t always smooth. But it ended successfully. Goran defended his PhD, putting a crown to the hard work he and Jan carried out for the last three years.
On Friday, April 25th TakeLab’s Goran Glavaš successfully defended his PhD thesis, earning the academic title of a Doctor. Goran defended the thesis entitled “Text Information Extraction and Retrieval Based on Event Graphs” (“Crpljenje i pretraživanje tekstnih informacija na temelju grafova događaja“) written under the supervision of Assist. Professor Jan Šnajder.
The thesis is the final result of the three-year research on extracting and structuring event-oriented information from natural language texts (primarily news stories) and successfully applying these information on various information retrieval and natural language processing tasks. During his PhD, Goran published (mostly in collaboration with his supervisor Jan) fifteen scientific articles, two of which in journals indexed in the Current Contents database, and a number of them at major NLP conferences.
The defense itself lasted for two hours and was attended by over 80 people. The defense took place in FER’s lecture room D346, with a capacity of 80 people, and yet there were a number of people sitting in the last row. The event started with Goran’s 45 minutes long presentation of the thesis, followed by a half-hour Q&A session with the defense Committee (Prof. Nikola Bogunović, Prof. Ivana Podnar Žarko, Assist. Prof. Nikola Ljubešić from Faculty of Arts and Sciences). Finally, the Committe withdrew for a discussion and evaluation, soon to return with a positive verdict! The celebration in FER’s gallery then began and lasted long in night!
