Bojana, Maria Pia, and Martin attended the First International Summer School on Data Science in Split. Whereas Martin helped in organizing practical sessions, Bojana and Maria Pia participated in the summer school and brushed up on their machine learning skills.
What a sight — 60 machine learning enthusiasts strolling along Split’s main promenade, Riva. Of course, they weren’t there just by chance.
On September 26 — 30, this pearl of Croatian coast hosted the First International Summer School on Data Science (SSDS 2016), organized by the Center of Research Excellence for Data Science and Advanced Cooperative Systems. This 5-day school focused on machine learning as a necessary tool in today’s world, giving insights into both fundamental and advanced concepts of machine learning, data analysis, and inference. As leading experts in machine learning and natural language processing in Croatia, we got invited to partake in the organization of the school’s practical sessions.
Our Martin was in charge of the practical sessions dealing with ensembles: (gradient) boosting and random forests. On the other side, our Bojana and Maria Pia enrolled the school as participants and refreshed their knowledge of this exciting field (all while silently judging Martin’s teaching).
However, the school wasn’t all about a packed schedule — the participants got to enjoy a guided tour of Split’s historical attractions, grabbing a beer or two along the way.
